The Congregation was formed in just under ten years through the joint efforts of its two founders: Father Terme and Mother Thérèse. But they were not alone. Both recognised the intervention of the Holy Spirit or Providence in the way events unfolded. Mother Thérèse wrote: “Neither Father Terme nor I knew what we were doing: God guided everything.” In a constant interweaving, their intuitions and powerful actions followed one another, correcting or amplifying each other, until they gave the Cenacle the character it has today.
The house of welcome for pilgrims, established by Father Terme, evolved thanks to Mother Thérèse: it became a spiritual retreat house.
Father Terme discovered the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius during a personal retreat: he asked his religious to live them too and to bring them to life for the pilgrims they welcomed.
Appointed superior by default, Mother Thérèse proved herself equal to the task. Even after being removed from her position, she performed an act of a foundress.
